NATO.0+55 KLONE
A tribute, not original software. NATO.0+55+3d was made by Netochka Nezvanova / 0f0003 Maschinenkunst (1999–2001). This is a klone: a browser reconstruction built from NN's help files, out of love for the original. The objekt names, the messages, the help patches and the language are NN's. None of this is NN's code, and none of it is an invention of mine.
NATO.0+55+3d was the real-time video library for Max that came before Jitter: 242.objekts with names like 242.dna, 242.konjunktiva, 242.ultrasnd and 242.parad!sz, and help files written in NN's own mangled, multilingual voice. The first version of MedusasMirror was built with nato, before it moved to Jitter. The externals were closed binaries for the old Mac OS, and they stopped running a long time ago.
NATO.0+55 KLONE brings it back in a browser tab: a little Max-style patcher where those objekts can be wired together again, on a laptop or an iPad.
What is NN's and what is not
- NN's: the 112 objekt names, every message and menu, the help patches (decoded from the binary Max 3 files — they open live inside the klone), the categories of Nato Modules, and the effekt protocol (0 off, 1 on, 2 freeze, 3 bypass).
- Not NN's: the algorithms. Each objekt was rebuilt from its name, NN's text and its parameters. 41 of them are marked guess in the objekt list — the most speculative.
What it does
- A patcher — ⌘E locks and unlocks; double-click for a new objekt (with autocomplete), drag cords from outlets to inlets; messages, numbers, toggles, buttons, comments.
- The objekts — image generators (242.film, 242.vdig for the camera, 242.qd, 242.3d, 242.fraktal), masks and matrices, blurs, warpers, rescanners, TV n' noize, colour processors, image analysis, collage and difference, display windows (242.ekran — pop it out to a second screen, or go fullscreen) and recording (242.rekord writes .webm).
- Help — double-click any 242 objekt for its help patch and NN's text; Nato Modules opens NN's overview patch.
- Files — save and open .nato.json patches, and open old Max 3/4 patches too, binary or text. Drop movies or images on the window to make a 242.film.
- Grafport — from 160×120 up to 1920×1080.
What a browser can't do — QuickTime editing, real monitor gamma tables, shutting down the machine — each has a stand-in: 242.beppo tints the page instead of the monitor, 242.parazit hosts built-in mirror and kaleidoskop plug-ins, 242.parad!sz blacks out the window instead of the computer.
One self-contained HTML file, no internet needed. Built with Claude, October 2026. Lives in TROY/NATO (nato-klone.html) — local only, not deployed.
