Lets see, I got single comics 1-14 inherited from LliWilburn. It took me awhile (years) to be bothered with reading them. I found them pretty good... and nostalgia inducing. I remember many of my friends being into this graphic novel series when I went to parsons in nyc. I particularly remember SandySpreitz having an ashtray in the shape of a mask of his face. Anyway, so now I have read in addition to those, some of the anthologies I’ve found in the bibliotheek, and I guess I will try now to read them all.

  1. Preludes & Noctures (1-9)
I was a little confused by this at first. It felt like coming in at the middle of a story, which I guess is what it was. The Dream Lord has been held captive and his realm gone to waste. Once free he must gather the pieces of himself again they are held by three deamons. A rather amusing contest is held in hell. It ends with him angering Lucifer Morningstar.
  2. The Doll’s House (10-16)
A very creepy and humorous serial killer convention coincides with a quest of Rose Walker whose grandmother has been asleep for years. Introduced is The Corinthian, a renegade nightmare. Are the superheroes living in the little kids head in this series? Important later.
  3. Dream Country (17-20)
I believe this is the one where we find Calliope captive of some hack writer. She and Dream had a child and it was Orpheus of all things. Also the story of Fairie and the Shakespere “Midsummer Nights Dream” connection.
  4. Season of Mists (21-28)
Lucifer quits hell giving Morpheus the key.
  5. A Game of You (32-37)
The Cuckoo. Something inside of a little girl.
  6. Fables & Reflections
  7. Brief Lives (41-49)1
He kills Orpheus, it was what he wanted. “You have a life, so live” was the advice he gave but Orpheus went to hell to seek his love anyway. This mercy killing sets Dream up for his own end. The saddest of all the sad things which happen to him is the second death of his son.
  8. World’s End
  9. The Kindly Ones (57-69)
A really lovely and fitting end. The dreaming is ripped apart by a mothers rage.
  10. The Wake
  11. Endless Nights
A new one! I saw this for sale at the comic store just up the street but alas, I’ve no disposible income lately to spend on such things (it cost 18euro btw)

I also own Dust Covers which is a compendium of all the Sandman covers made by DaveMcKean and DeathTheHighCostOfLiving which I bought long time ago because I liked the idea of Death being a girl that looked like SusanMiller back in the day ;)

Theres alot to like about the series really. The depiction of The Furies in The Kindly Ones, for example. I’d say that The kKindly Ones and Brief Lives were my favorite compilations.
