2006-01-15 Our next original project is to make a romantic video game SweatWiki:TheApartment (that is if we live through making Deuteronomy). Just typing “romantic game” sounds odd, I’m sure, kind of like when LL cool J made the first rap love-song ;)
But anyway, for research on romantic fictions, since there is a dearth of games to look for in this arena (though we always look to Gog:Ceremony of Innocence as the benchmark), we are watching lots of nice romantic films... trying to get in touch with how romance is represented in contemporary static fiction so we can figure out what we want to say with our interactive fiction. We know we want it to be the tragic sort of romance. We know that one must have some mythic elements. Honestly though, the only movies we both truly like are these romantic semi-tragic ultra simple story films. Stories that deal with the banal (most often contemporary) everyday but which try to get past it and show you the jewels of life. Desire and how important it is as a motivation to go on living.

some nice movies we’ve watched.

Some notes: That the feelings of romance which sweep us away feel rare, special and yet we can know that this is something banal, something which happens all the time. Describe instinct as something which doesn’t sound like the soul, or fate, it is impossible. The love puts us in touch with the meaning of life, The mythic moment inside all of us. If it is “real” one wonder what more can one live for than this? “Right and wrong don’t matter.” “The song has ended, but as the songwriter wrote, the melody lingers on.”
